Hyderabad: The monsoon session of the Telangana Legislative Assembly, beginning Monday, is expected to witness heated exchanges as the ruling Congress and the main opposition BRS prepare for a major political confrontation, while the BJP is also set to raise several issues against the state government.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has said that his government is ready to discuss all issues in the Assembly. He has also criticised BRS president and former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao for allegedly remaining away from the Assembly and public engagements since the BRS lost power in December 2023.

Reddy challenged KCR to attend the Assembly and debate the Congress government’s performance during its first 1,000 days in office against the 10-year rule of the previous BRS government. Congress activists have also staged protests demanding KCR’s resignation as Leader of the Opposition, citing his absence from the Assembly.

The Chief Minister recently claimed that the state government had spent around Rs 1.24 crore on KCR’s salary and approximately Rs 21 crore on his security, bullet-proof vehicles and other facilities over the past 1,000 days.

The BRS, however, has rejected the Congress’ criticism and is expected to strongly oppose any demand for KCR’s resignation as Leader of the Opposition. BRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao has released a chargesheet against the Congress government, accusing it of failing to fulfil several key electoral promises and of falling short in governance.

The BRS plans to raise issues concerning farmers, students, unemployed youth, women and government employees. It is also expected to question the government over pending tuition fee reimbursement, the proposed Rs 5 lakh Bharosa card for students, scooters promised to girl students and the proposed merger of polytechnic education with the Young India Skills University.

Meanwhile, the BJP is preparing to corner the Congress government over various issues, including the large-scale inclusion of lands in the prohibited list under Section 22-A of the Registration Act. The party is also expected to raise questions over unfulfilled promises made by the ruling Congress during the Assembly session.

Another issue likely to come up is the minimum age for contesting Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Following protests in Delhi over the NEET issue, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had said that the Telangana government would pass a resolution seeking to reduce the minimum age for candidates from 25 to 21 years.

With Congress, BRS and BJP preparing to raise competing issues, the monsoon session is likely to witness intense political debates and confrontations from the very beginning.
