Hyderabad: Telangana is planning to build India’s largest cricket stadium at Bharat Future City, with the state government proposing a 100-acre facility that would surpass the 1.32 lakh seating capacity of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is expected to lay the foundation stone for the project in December.

The government plans to develop the stadium as an international-standard, multi-purpose sports and events facility. Officials are currently identifying suitable land at Bharat Future City for the project. The proposed venue is expected to have a seating capacity higher than the Narendra Modi Stadium, which is currently India’s largest cricket stadium. The construction cost is also likely to exceed that of the Ahmedabad facility.

According to sources, the BCCI is expected to bear the construction and maintenance costs, while the Telangana government will provide the required land. Officials are working on a model under which the facility could be jointly managed by the BCCI and the state government.

The proposed stadium is expected to have strong connectivity, with the Outer Ring Road, proposed Regional Ring Road, proposed Metro extension to Future City and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad located nearby. The facility will also form part of the broader Sports City, tourism and Net-Zero City concepts planned for Bharat Future City.

Officials said the existing Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium at Uppal does not have sufficient seating capacity to host major international events such as World Cup matches. The government is therefore planning a new state-of-the-art venue to meet Hyderabad’s future sporting requirements.

New Stadium to Double Up as Convention Venue

As envisioned by the Chief Minister, the facility will go beyond cricket and include provisions for football matches and large-scale concerts.

The government is also exploring facilities that would enable the stadium to host major events, exhibitions and conventions, addressing Hyderabad’s need for a large venue comparable to the Hyderabad International Convention Centre.

The state is simultaneously focusing on developing world-class sports infrastructure at Bharat Future City to create better opportunities for young athletes. Officials said the Young India Physical Education and Sports University is already working with international universities and organisations towards this objective.
