Hyderabad, August 29: The Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Commission has submitted a report on minor irrigation to Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, making several key recommendations to strengthen irrigation systems and protect water resources in the state.

The Commission recommended re-establishing a separate minor irrigation system equipped with technical units to improve water-use efficiency. It also suggested establishing command area-based management systems to link small and large irrigation resources.

For the conservation of ponds and tanks, the Commission proposed a special Minor Irrigation Act. It also recommended immediately identifying the Full Tank Level (FTL) boundaries of ponds, removing encroachments and taking measures to protect the water bodies.

The Commission said that restoration of ponds is essential for water security, agricultural stability and the development of rural livelihoods in Telangana.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy suggested that the Commission focus on crop rotation, increasing horticultural cultivation and promoting Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs).

During the meeting, the Commission team briefed the Chief Minister on the programmes undertaken during the past two years and the recommendations submitted to the government.

Revanth Reddy expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Commission.
