Patriotic Views – 9 September 2025
Hyderabad, Telangana: The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) Chairperson, Hon’ble Dr. Justice Shameem Akther, today presented an appreciation letter to Head Constable Sridhar Varma of the City Armed Reserve (CAR), Hyderabad, for his remarkable humanitarian act during last week’s heavy rains in Hyderabad.
On the evening of September 4, 2025, Hyderabad experienced unprecedented rainfall, leading to severe flooding in several areas, including Banjara Hills. During this crisis, Head Constable Sridhar Varma, deputed as part of the pilot-cum-escort security staff attached to the Hon’ble Chairperson, noticed a 22-year-old woman, Ms. Nainika, stranded alone at a bus stop on Road No. 3, Banjara Hills.
Ms. Nainika, an MBA student visiting from Australia, had been left by her brother and was unable to contact her family due to water-damaged phone. Suffering from fear of water, she was in distress as floodwaters rose around her. Displaying great courage and empathy, Sridhar Varma waded through waist-deep waters, offered her his police jerkin, reassured her, and contacted her family to inform them of her safety.
With cab services unavailable and under directions from senior officers, Head Constable Sridhar personally escorted Ms. Nainika through flood-affected streets for over two hours and safely dropped her at her home in Vanasthalipuram. The young woman was reunited with her relieved mother and sister late that night.
The humanitarian service of Head Constable Sridhar Varma was widely covered by newspapers and social media, earning him public appreciation for his brave and selfless action. Recognizing his dedication, Hon’ble Dr. Justice Shameem Akther commended his exemplary service as an inspiration for all, reflecting the true spirit of policing and human rights protection.
The Chairperson emphasized that such acts of compassion go beyond duty and uphold the dignity and safety of citizens during natural calamities.
