“Hands Off Secunderabad”: Dr. Sravan Dasoju Slams Govt Move to Erase 200-Year-Old Identity
Hyderabad | January 5, 2026:
Dr. Sravan Dasoju, MLC of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), on Monday strongly opposed the proposed reorganisation of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), alleging that it aims to dilute and erase the historic identity of Secunderabad.
Describing the move as a “cultural assassination masked as administrative reform,” Dr. Sravan said Secunderabad, founded in 1806, is not merely an administrative unit but a living city with over 200 years of history, culture, and civic pride, standing as Hyderabad’s twin city for generations.
“Attempting to wipe out such a historic city under the guise of reorganisation is nothing short of cultural vandalism. This is not reform; it is the murder of history,” he stated.
Criticising what he termed a unilateral and authoritarian approach, Dr. Sravan objected to the proposal to create a separate municipal structure under the Malkajgiri name by absorbing Secunderabad’s historic boundaries. He said major decisions were being taken without public consultation or stakeholder engagement, amounting to an abuse of power.
“Winning an election does not give anyone the licence to dismantle a city’s identity. Forcibly merging Secunderabad and erasing its name is an attack on the self-respect of its residents,” he said, calling the move a “dictatorial display of power.”
Warning of strong public resistance, the BRS leader said Secunderabad is deeply embedded in the memories and culture of its people, and any attempt to erase its name would provoke a mass response.
“Secunderabad symbolises our collective heritage. If the government touches its identity, it is challenging the self-respect of every citizen. History will judge those who try to destroy what took centuries to build,” he added.
Dr. Sravan demanded that the government immediately withdraw what he called “dangerous efforts” and warned that the BRS would lead a large-scale movement to protect the existence and sanctity of Secunderabad if the proposal is not shelved.
