Congress, BRS Clash in Telangana Assembly Over Speaker Remarks

Hyderabad: Sept 8, The Telangana Legislative Assembly witnessed heated exchanges on Tuesday, the second day of the Monsoon Session, with the Congress and BRS trading allegations and demanding apologies from each other over the alleged derogatory remarks made by BRS MLC Tata Madhusudhan against Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar.

The morning session ended with an adjournment after tensions escalated between the ruling and opposition benches. Congress members demanded that BRS president and Leader of Opposition K. Chandrashekar Rao appear in the Assembly and apologise to the Speaker over Madhusudhan’s remarks.

The Speaker also displayed unusual anger during the proceedings and reprimanded BRS deputy floor leader T. Harish Rao. In an emotional response, Gaddam Prasad Kumar said, “What about me, Harish? Your mother was not named, it was my mother,” referring to remarks raised during the heated debate.

The BRS, led by Harish Rao, countered the Congress demand by insisting that the government apologise to three BRS women MLAs who were allegedly manhandled by police while attempting to enter the Assembly on Monday. Harish Rao alleged that police personnel behaved roughly with the women legislators and that the sari of one of them was pulled during the incident.

Amid the confrontation, Legislative Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and the Speaker had sought reports from the police regarding the BRS allegations. He said appropriate action could be considered after the police submitted their report.

Congress ministers and MLAs, including Adluri Laxman and Danasari Seethakka, rejected the BRS demands and continued to press for an apology from the opposition. Harish Rao, meanwhile, said Tata Madhusudhan had withdrawn his remarks and expressed regret if his comments had caused any hurt to the Speaker.

The exchanges intensified when Harish Rao entered the well of the House and demanded that BRS MLA Sabitha Indra Reddy be allowed to speak. With the situation becoming increasingly disorderly, Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar adjourned the House for a break.
