CM Revanth Reddy Slams KCR for Obstructing 42% BC Quota Bill

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy came down heavily on former CM and BRS President K. Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR), accusing him of obstructing the state government’s move to provide 42 per cent reservation for BCs in local body elections.
Speaking during the debate on the BC Quota Bill in the Assembly, the CM said KCR was “against BC empowerment” and that the opposition was deliberately creating hurdles in passing the legislation. He pointed out that while BRS MLA G. Kamalakar expressed full support for the bill, the party leadership was unhappy and blocking it with a “malicious motive.” Revanth Reddy appealed to Kamalakar not to bow to party pressure and spread misinformation among weaker sections.
The CM blamed KCR’s government for enacting the Panchayat Raj Act, 2018, which restricted quota beyond 50 per cent and stalled BC reservation. He criticized BRS for failing to support the dharna at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, that demanded Union government approval for pending BC quota bills. “This clearly shows the lack of sincerity of BRS in empowering backward classes,” he charged.
Revanth Reddy further accused the opposition of influencing the Governor to stop the promulgation of an Ordinance on BC quota. “We sent two separate bills to the Governor for 42 per cent quota in education, empowerment, and local bodies. Both bills have been pending with the President of India for the last five months,” he said, adding that the Governor referred them to the President without approval.
The CM also revealed that the state government wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi five times seeking an appointment on this issue but received no positive response. “People have already rejected BRS, and if they continue to play politics with BC empowerment, they will face public anger again,” he warned.
Elaborating on the government’s efforts, the CM said that a Dedication Commission was set up in line with High Court directions to conduct a caste survey. Rajya Sabha MP R. Krishnaiah had filed a writ petition demanding the data collection through this commission. “The survey began on February 4, 2024, and was completed within one year, on February 4, 2025. We worked within a 365-day deadline to frame the law,” he noted.
Revanth Reddy also dismissed concerns raised by BRS about hurdles faced in Rajasthan and Bihar, stating that Telangana had already sent official delegations to study and resolve such challenges.
Concluding his remarks, the CM said the Cabinet had approved the BC quota before adopting the resolution in the Assembly, and despite obstacles, the government was committed to ensuring 42 per cent reservation for BCs in the upcoming local body elections.
