AI can analyse retinal images for cardiovascular risk: Researchers

New York, Oct 4 (PV News) Researchers have found that AI can analyze retinal images to assess cardiovascular risk, potentially revolutionizing early disease detection. A position paper in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology highlights the growing role of AI in ophthalmology. The collaboration includes researchers from institutions like Penn Engineering, Penn Medicine, and the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center.

Fundus photography, which captures images of the retina, allows AI to identify systemic disease markers such as elevated HbA1c levels, a key indicator of high blood sugar. A pilot study trained AI models to predict HbA1c levels using retinal images, considering factors like AI model size, diabetes presence, and patient demographics. The study also emphasized the need for unbiased training samples, noting that skewed data, such as predominantly older patients, can impact AI performance.

The research underscores the importance of building trustworthy AI models for cardiovascular risk assessment and advancing reliable “oculomics” technology. This approach could improve the management of chronic diseases like diabetes, contributing to more personalized and preventative healthcare.
