BRS MLCs Tata Madhu, Naveen Kumar Reddy Suspended From Telangana Council

Hyderabad: Sept 8, BRS MLCs Tata Madhusudhan and N. Naveen Kumar Reddy were suspended from the Telangana Legislative Council on Tuesday for the remainder of the ongoing session over alleged derogatory and unparliamentary remarks against Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar and indecent behaviour during a protest in the Assembly premises.

The action followed a resolution moved by Legislative Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu, accusing the two MLCs of making “highly derogatory, insulting and unparliamentary utterances” against the Speaker near Gate No. 3 of the Assembly on Monday. The resolution also alleged that the MLCs removed their T-shirts in public in the presence of women, calling the conduct objectionable and unbecoming of members of the Legislative Council.

The Council adopted the resolution by voice vote amid strong protests from BRS members, who demanded a division of votes. The situation became tense when Madhusudhan and Naveen Kumar Reddy entered the Council while the resolution against them was being discussed. Congress members objected to their presence and demanded immediate suspension.

Following their suspension under Rule 308 of the Telangana Legislative Council rules, the two BRS MLCs staged a dharna outside Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy’s chambers. Marshals later evacuated them from the area. They then attempted to address the media at the Assembly’s media point, but security personnel prevented them from speaking and shifted them outside the Assembly premises.

Earlier, the Telangana Legislative Assembly had adopted a resolution directing that all evidence relating to the alleged conduct of the two MLCs be forwarded to the Legislative Council for further action. The resolution, moved by Health Minister Damodar Rajnarsimha, also urged BRS supremo and Leader of the Opposition K. Chandrashekar Rao to take responsibility for the conduct of the two MLCs and tender an unconditional apology to the Speaker.

Meanwhile, police arrested Madhusudhan and Naveen Kumar Reddy on Tuesday. The case was registered at Saifabad police station based on a complaint by Pollepalli Venkatesham, Officer on Special Duty to the Assembly Speaker. Police alleged that the two MLCs and their associates had gathered in the Assembly security area and engaged in misconduct.

The case was registered as Crime No. 364/2026 under Section 352 read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police argued before the Nampally court that the accused were influential persons and could potentially tamper with evidence. They also cited protests by caste organisations and prevailing political tensions as reasons for seeking judicial remand.

However, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court at Nampally rejected the police request for judicial remand and granted bail to both MLCs. The court took into account that the Assembly session was underway and that the accused, as elected representatives, were required to attend the proceedings. They were directed to furnish personal bonds.

A minor altercation between police personnel and lawyers was also reported at the Nampally court when the MLCs were produced. Police said the situation was brought under control without further escalation.

The Legislative Council’s decision to suspend the two MLCs will also be referred to the Ethics Committee, which is expected to submit its report at the earliest.
