Telangana Auto Fares May Rise to ₹30 Minimum
Hyderabad: September 5, Auto-rickshaw fares in Telangana are likely to increase, with a government-appointed committee recommending a hike in the minimum fare from ₹20 to ₹30 for the first 1.6 km.
The committee, headed by Transport Commissioner Dr. K. Ilambharathi, has submitted its recommendations to the state government. Under the proposed fare structure, passengers would pay ₹14 per kilometre after the initial 1.6 km. The report also recommends a waiting charge of 75 paise per minute and a 50% night-time surcharge.
The committee said auto fares have remained unchanged for nearly 12 years, while fuel, insurance, maintenance and other operating costs have increased significantly. It considered an auto purchase price of around ₹2.55 lakh, a 70% bank loan, a driver’s monthly salary of ₹25,000 and an average daily travel distance of 163.8 km while calculating the revised fare.
The recommendations came after the Telangana State Auto and App-Based Unions’ coalition announced an indefinite strike from August 7 over 14 demands. Following discussions with union representatives on August 23, officials assured them that proposals would be submitted within 15 days, leading the unions to withdraw the strike call.
The final decision now rests with the Telangana government. If approved, official orders implementing the revised auto fares are expected to be issued.
